UCAN student represents Great Britain at the 2018 BMX World Championships in Azerbaijan - 08/06/2018

A student from the University of Chester Academy Northwich (UCAN) will fly the flag for the UK when he competes in the British Bicycle Motocross Racing (BMX) world championships.

The very best BMX athletes will compete for first place at the World Championships and student Lewis Holmes (Year 10) from the University of Chester Academy Northwich (UCAN) will represent Great Britain at the competition in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Once the gate drops every move counts as the athletes’ race elbow-to elbow over the jumps and into the turns, using any gaps to move into a front position.

This year’s great international sports event will run between 5-9 June 2018. Azerbaijan has hosted numerous cycling competitions since the early 1990s and the history goes back to the 1930s when the bicycle was first introduced as one of the means of transportation.

Lewis is 15 years old and has worked extremely hard in training to gain a qualification time to allow him to move further up through the rankings. Lewis is now ranked within the top 3 in his category nationally which has earned him a place on the Great Britain team.

Lewis trains regularly each week in Manchester demonstrating determination and commitment to his sport. Lewis has set both national and international targets for himself on his journey to sporting success.

Ms Geraldine Lynch, Head of Physical Education at the Academy, said: “I am very pleased for Lewis as I know how hard he has worked over the last few years to move up through the rankings nationally which had in turn earned him his place in the GB Team. It is a huge achievement to gain a place on the GB Team and Lewis is taking it in his stride. He deserves it and I hope he enjoys every minute of this experience. He has a very promising future ahead of him in this sport.”

Lewis said: “I am really happy to be representing Great Britain and I am excited as I have been working towards this for a long time. My main aim in the championships would be to get a qualification time that would put me in the finals.”
