UCAN students board the betty bus! - 05/10/2017

On Monday 2nd October, Year 7 and 8 students were given the opportunity to board the specially designed ‘Betty Bus’.

The ‘Betty Bus’ is a free immersive session for 8-12 year olds encouraging open and honest conversations about periods. The session included one-hour aboard the Betty Bus, where trained facilitators help girls to explore how periods can affect their emotions and what they can do to combat them.

Whilst the girls were on the bus, the boys had the opportunity to take part in a separate session focusing on their understanding and attitude towards puberty.

Organiser Mr Russell said: “UCAN is always looking for innovative ways to educate our students with respect to physical and emotional development. The Betty Bus program is designed to help create a generation of girls and boys who are truly at ease talking about the menstrual cycle and periods. The students engaged in two science workshops in addition to the Betty bus experience and It was hugely successful. It allowed all year 7 and 8 students to understand more about this perfectly natural time in their lives, whilst encouraging open and honest discussion between peers.”

One student commented: “It was great to go on the betty bus with just girls, I have been nervous about periods but now I’m ready” They added: “I especially enjoyed asking questions and hearing what my friends thought about periods, we had fun on the bus and there was loads of laughter – I learned loads”
